What changes the choice?
Choose Jajce when the waterfall, historic core and Pliva Lakes are the main reason to stop. Choose Travnik when the fortress, old town and a possible Vlašić mountain extension fit the route better.
When Jajce can stay a day trip
A focused visit to the waterfall, fortress and central historic sights can fit a day. The case for sleeping in Jajce gets stronger when the Pliva Lakes and watermills belong in the plan, or when the overnight removes an out-and-back detour on a Central Bosnia route.
Plan the visit before choosing the overnight.
Jajce
Jajce's historic core is compact enough for a car-light stay, while the Pliva Lakes create the main reason to think beyond the center. The useful choice is therefore central waterfall/fortress access versus a quieter lake-oriented base, not simply the shortest straight-line distance between properties.
Choose it when…
- short cultural stays centered on the waterfall, fortress and old town
- bus-based Central Bosnia itineraries
- road trips combining Jajce with Travnik and the Pliva Lakes
- travelers who want lake recreation but still plan time in the historic center
Where the location choice splits
Historic center
Best for walking to the waterfall, fortress, catacombs, restaurants and a central arrival. For a one- or two-night cultural stop, this is usually the simplest base without a car.

Pliva Lakes side
Better when water recreation and scenery are the main purpose of the stay. The lakes and watermills sit outside the immediate historic core, so a car, bicycle or taxi makes back-and-forth travel easier.

Arriving by bus
Current Centrotrans booking data confirms Sarajevo–Jajce coach service. Schedules are operational data, so use the live operator search for your date instead of relying on a hard-coded departure list.
Official links
Walkability
The waterfall and principal historic sights sit in or immediately around the town center, which makes a central stay practical on foot once you arrive.
Official links
Pliva Lakes
Official tourism material places the Pliva Lakes roughly five kilometres from town, with the watermills between the lakes. That distance is the clearest reason a vehicle or bicycle adds value to an otherwise walkable Jajce stay.

Parking
A current authoritative citywide parking guide was not found in this review, so the page does not generalize parking availability. Check the verified property itself for on-site or nearby parking.
Pliva Waterfall & Lakes
The waterfall and historic core favor a central stay; the lakes create a second, quieter location choice outside the immediate centre.
See it on the Bosnia map →Travnik
Travnik is a road-and-bus destination rather than a rail/airport gateway. A central stay keeps the fortress, Plava Voda and Bosanska street practical on foot; a car becomes more valuable when the trip expands toward Vlašić, Nova Bila or other Central Bosnia stops.
Choose it when…
- walkable old-core stays around the fortress and Plava Voda
- bus-based Central Bosnia itineraries
- road trips linking Jajce, Travnik and Vlašić
- travelers using Travnik as the service base before heading to the mountain
Where the location choice splits
Central Travnik
The simplest no-car base for the fortress, Plava Voda, Bosanska street and restaurants. The main bus station is also central enough to make a short city stay practical without a private vehicle.
Outer Travnik and Vlašić-bound trips
Choose road-access accommodation when parking or a fast mountain departure matters more than walking the old core. Vlašić is a distinct mountain stay decision and should not be treated as a neighborhood of central Travnik.

Road and bus arrival
The municipality identifies the M-5 as the main corridor through Travnik and the R-413 as the connection toward Vlašić. It also places the main bus station at Stanična bb in the town area.

No rail or local airport
Municipal visitor information does not present Travnik as a rail or air arrival point, so practical car-free access is by intercity coach. Re-check the operating carrier for your actual date.

Parking zones
The municipality adopted a multi-zone public-parking framework covering central streets including Bosanska, Prnjavor, Aleja Konzula and Plava Voda. Because rollout and charging can change, follow current signs instead of an old fee table.

Travnik fortress & old core
A central base suits the fortress and Plava Voda; the road toward Vlašić becomes more important when mountain time is the priority.
