Mira’s guide

Sarajevo or Mostar: which base works better without a car?

A practical comparison of old-city walking, airport/rail/coach arrival and the point at which regional day trips make a car useful.

Quick answer

What changes the choice?

Choose Sarajevo when a longer city break, airport access and a broader urban transport network matter most. Choose Mostar when the Old Bridge and a compact historic core are the centre of the trip, especially on a rail or coach itinerary.

When Mostar works as a day trip instead

Keep Sarajevo as the only base when Stari Most and the compact Old Town are the whole Mostar task and the current return transport fits comfortably. Give Mostar its own night when evening and early-morning time, an easier onward connection, or a wider Herzegovina day matters enough to justify the hotel change.

Plan the visit before choosing the overnight.

Option 1

Sarajevo

Sarajevo works particularly well without a car when you stay along the historic-centre and central transit corridor. The important accommodation choice is not just 'central or not': an address on the valley floor behaves very differently from one on the surrounding hills, especially with luggage or a late arrival.

Choose it when…

  • first-time city breaks built around Baščaršija and the central sights
  • airport arrivals that want a direct public-transport option into the historic centre
  • car-free trips that combine walking with tram, trolleybus or bus
  • travelers using Sarajevo as a gateway to Ilidža and the Olympic mountains

Where the location choice splits

Baščaršija and the historic core

Best when the old city is the main reason for the trip. Most day-to-day sightseeing is on foot and the airport bus runs through to Baščaršija/Bentbaša. If you arrive by car, verify the property's parking arrangement before booking rather than assuming curb access beside a central address.

Ferhadija, Skenderija and the central corridor

A useful compromise between old-city walking and easier access toward the wider tram/bus network. This is often the simpler choice for rail/bus connections, business trips, or travelers who expect to move between the old core and newer Sarajevo.

Ilidža or mountain bases

Choose a separate base when airport proximity, Vrelo Bosne, skiing or mountain time is more important than walking out into Baščaršija. Sarajevo's tram corridor reaches Ilidža, but Bjelašnica and Jahorina should be treated as distinct stay decisions rather than city neighborhoods.

Arrival & movement

Airport arrival

Sarajevo International Airport and Centrotrans operate an Airport–Baščaršija/Bentbaša bus with a timetable adjusted around passenger needs. Check the live airport timetable for your travel day, especially for late arrivals and weekends; the airport also publishes daily terminal hours rather than describing a 24-hour terminal.

Public transport

The city network combines tram, trolleybus, bus and minibus services. The main tram corridor links Baščaršija with Ilidža; minibuses are relevant for neighborhoods that climb away from the flatter central axis.

Car or no car?

A car adds little to a short old-city stay if your verified property is genuinely central. It becomes more useful for mountain or regional day trips. For a central stay, treat secure overnight parking as a property-level question, not a city-wide assumption.

Baščaršija

The historic core makes the valley-floor versus hillside choice tangible: walking is easy in the centre, luggage and parking can be a different problem.

Option 2

Mostar

Mostar accommodation choices should follow both the planned visit and the actual arrival. Compare Old Town addresses with the terminal on your ticket, then check the entrance route and room format. Regional trips need a separate transport plan; a city stay does not establish access to every Herzegovina sight.

Choose it when…

  • Old Bridge and Old Town-focused city breaks
  • Sarajevo–Mostar rail itineraries and long-distance coach arrivals
  • car-free visitors who mainly want the historic core
  • road trips using Mostar as a base for Blagaj and wider Herzegovina

Where the location choice splits

Old Town and the bridge approaches

Best for walking straight into the historic core. Expect stone, steps and narrow approaches rather than door-to-door car convenience. If you are driving, favor a verified property that explicitly solves parking rather than choosing by straight-line distance to Stari Most alone.

Central-city addresses and your arrival terminal

Compare an address near your actual arrival with an Old Town address. Rondo and the railway/coach station area are different map points; a central-city label does not establish the route or easier vehicle access. Check the terminal and final approach before booking.

Arrival & movement

Airport arrival

Mostar Airport publishes a city shuttle tied to arriving flights, with stops that include Lučki Bridge, the bus/train station and central-city points. Re-check the airport page for the flights and stops operating on your date.

Rail and coach

Arriva identifies its Mostar coach stop at Trg Ivana Krndelja, beside the railway station. Confirm the stop on your own coach ticket rather than assuming every operator uses it. Check the current ŽFBH notice and the final terminal-to-entrance route before committing to a car-free arrival.

Regional public transport

Mostar Bus publishes city/suburban routes including services toward Blagaj and a Mostar–Međugorje line. Those routes can replace a car for specific day trips, but they do not form one high-frequency visitor loop around all Herzegovina sights.

Parking

Central parking is an active management issue rather than a safe assumption. The City of Mostar began rolling out smart-parking sensors on several central streets in 2026, reinforcing the value of checking a property's own parking arrangement before arrival.

Old Bridge & Old Town

Being close to Stari Most favors walkability; station access and easier vehicle handling may pull the better base farther into central Mostar.
