The practical answer
Use Mostar for Kravica, Jajce for Pliva Waterfall and its historic centre, then Bihać for a dedicated Una National Park day. Treat the moves between regions as travel stages. Martin Brod is a separate upper-Una outing, not an assumed short extension of Štrbački buk. Short on time? Keep one waterfall region and enjoy it properly.
Compare the options
| Decision | Recommendation | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Where should the trip begin? | Mostar if you are starting in southern Herzegovina | Kravica belongs to the Ljubuški side of a Mostar stay; visit it before committing to the journey north. |
| Where does Jajce fit? | An intentional central-Bosnia stop or overnight | Pliva Waterfall sits below the old town. Separate time for the fortress or heritage walk instead of treating Jajce as a petrol stop. |
| Which Una waterfall first? | Štrbački buk on a park-focused Bihać day | It has its own designated visitor approach and should be the day's main objective, not a casual stop after a long transfer. |
| When is Martin Brod worth the extra distance? | When the upper Una is a separate day or overnight priority | Martin Brod is not a walkable extension of Štrbački buk. It is a distinct national-park zone. |
| Where should the nights go? | Mostar → Jajce → Bihać, adjusting to confirmed connections | Choose bases to avoid repeating long overland transfers and to leave enough daylight for each managed visitor area. |
| What if you cannot add enough days? | Keep one waterfall region instead of racing all three | The point is to experience the rivers rather than claim three attractions were visited from car windows. |
Arrive in Mostar: plan the Herzegovina outing first

Kravica is the principal waterfall day; nearby Koćuša is a separate candidate only if a realistic road route and current visitor arrangements make it worthwhile. Add Blagaj or Počitelj only if you are deliberately building a cultural route instead of a long waterfall stop.
Sleep in Mostar when you want an unhurried morning departure, not a late return to an unfamiliar intercity connection.
Give Kravica its own road day
Kravica's broad cascade is a managed visitor setting, but the ticket, approach, parking and swimming rules must come from the current operator. Treat the falls as the main part of the day, not a five-minute break en route to central Bosnia. Summer service and lower river flows can change the experience; do not infer present conditions from a photograph.
If your northbound leg would start late, keep a second night in Mostar instead of driving onward tired.
Move north to Jajce and let the town be the attraction

Pliva Waterfall is woven into Jajce's town setting beneath the historic centre, so a waterfall visit and a heritage walk belong together. The lakeside watermills are a further excursion; do not assume they fit into the same short town walk or a tight transport connection.
Choose a Jajce overnight if you arrive with limited daylight, care about the fortress, or have an uncertain onward connection.
Reach Bihać before choosing a national-park gate

Give yourself enough margin for rest, food and the next day's park arrangements. Ask your operator or driver which entrance to Štrbački buk you are using; do not assume a rafting meeting point, village name or generic map pin means the same visitor access.
Sleep in Bihać when Štrbački buk is the priority and you want an established city base for the park approach.
Spend a dedicated Una day at Štrbački buk

Follow signed visitor routes, confirm any entry requirements and keep river safety separate from a photograph or a guided rafting offer. You can see impressive water without entering the current, climbing outside a marked path or booking an activity that starts in a different part of the park.
Add Martin Brod only with another park-focused day, not as an assumed short detour from Štrbački buk.
Where to base yourself
Choose the base that makes the next morning easier. Use the destination guide for the location trade-offs, then compare individual stays and confirm the actual journey to the attraction.
Questions that help you plan
Can I visit Kravica, Pliva Waterfall and Štrbački buk in one day?
No sensible sightseeing plan treats all three regions as one relaxed day. Kravica belongs to the Mostar/Ljubuški area, Pliva Waterfall to Jajce, and Štrbački buk to a managed zone of Una National Park. Plan separate visits with nights or substantial travel time between them.
Is this a fixed five-day, four-night itinerary?
No. Five stages are a planning framework, not a guaranteed package. Additional travel days, nights and delays may be needed depending on your starting point, onward destination, season, weather and transport availability.
Do I need a rental car?
A vehicle or confirmed operator transfer makes the rural waterfall approaches more manageable, but a self-drive assumption is not appropriate for everyone. With buses, first verify every intercity leg and then a separate legal, reliable transfer for Kravica and the chosen Una visitor zone. The waterfall ticket is not a transport service.
Can I add Martin Brod to a Štrbački buk day?
Do not presume the two locations form a short circuit. They are separate national-park visitor areas. If Martin Brod's cascades and village heritage are priorities, allocate a separate outing and consider where you will sleep near the upper Una.
Which stops work best if I have only a weekend?
Choose the region where you already are. From Mostar, focus on Kravica and local Herzegovina sights. From Jajce, combine Pliva Waterfall with the historic town. From Bihać, plan one Una visitor zone. A forced three-region weekend costs too much time in transit.
Are the waterfall entrances open and the roads safe year-round?
The landscape exists year-round but visitor services, water levels, viewing zones and approach roads can vary. Check current official park or municipal notices and any local driving restrictions. This guide does not certify that a particular road, viewpoint or swimming area is open on your date.
