Trebinje's center is unusually easy to use on foot once you arrive, while many of the trips that make Eastern Herzegovina attractive are road-based. That creates a clear split: stay centrally for the river, Old Town and restaurants; keep a car when wineries, viewpoints or cross-border routing are part of the plan.

I’d stay focused on the Old Town, river and central streets when evenings on foot matter most. A car earns its keep when the plan expands to wineries, viewpoints, monasteries or onward border routing rather than for moving around the compact centre itself.
Trebinje makes more sense when the overnight and the road trip are treated as two layers of the day instead of one vague idea of ‘central’.

I’d choose the part of Trebinje that makes your ordinary morning and evening easy, then compare properties inside that smaller search.
| Area | Why choose it / what to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Old Town, Freedom Square and the river | This is the simplest car-light base. Trebinje Tourism lists the Old Town in the center and the main bus station about 650 metres from the center, so many central arrivals and evenings can be handled on foot. | Compare city map positions |
| Outer-center and road-access properties | Choose slightly outside the core when parking, a quick road exit or a larger property matters more than being inside the historic streets. This is often the better fit when Trebinje is one stop in a longer Herzegovina or Adriatic-border road trip. | Compare city map positions |
These Trebinje stops separate the places that fit the same local outing from the ones that need a separate trip.

The walled old town is a compact reference point for Trebinje’s central cafés, river walks and easy evenings on foot.

The historic bridge sits along the Trebišnjica beyond the tight old-town core and gives the central river walk a useful direction.

The hilltop complex above Trebinje is a useful reminder that the wider sightseeing geography climbs quickly away from the compact centre.

Tvrdoš sits outside Trebinje’s walkable centre and fits naturally into a wider road-based Eastern Herzegovina day.
Two stays can look equally convenient in a list but sit on very different roads or slopes. Explore their precise locations beside the main sights and local landmarks.

I’d re-check live schedules close to the trip, but these are the practical location choices worth making before you book.
Trebinje's bus station is within walking distance of the center and publishes staffed opening hours that are not 24-hour. Treat published long-distance timetables as date-sensitive and pre-arrange check-in or onward transport for a very late arrival rather than assuming station services will still be open.
Trebinje Tourism positions the city on road links toward Dubrovnik, Herceg Novi, Kotor, Mostar and Sarajevo. Distances can look short on a map, but any Croatia or Montenegro itinerary includes an international border, so do not plan around a fixed crossing time.
The city tourism office publishes two municipal parking zones plus a bus-parking location near Stepe Stepanovića. For central properties, verify whether parking is on-site, nearby public parking, or not included before arrival.
The central Old Town does not require one, but official tourism listings mark several outlying viewpoints and attractions as car-access trips. A car is therefore most valuable for countryside, wineries, monasteries and onward regional routing rather than for the center itself.
