Una National Park guide: Štrbački buk, Martin Brod, Bihać and how to plan the park

Compare Bihać and Kulen Vakuf as Una National Park bases, plan Štrbački buk or Martin Brod, and work out park-day transport before booking accommodation.

Quick answer

The practical answer

Choose Bihać when a city evening and an arranged park outing suit your trip. Consider Kulen Vakuf when the settlement and the Martin Brod side of the park lead your itinerary. In either case, settle the transport to your chosen visitor zone before booking: a town address does not put you at a waterfall entrance. Plan one main zone for a full park day, then add another only when the route and return work.

  • Štrbački buk and Martin Brod are separate visitor experiences, not neighbouring stops on one short walk.
  • Bihać is useful as a service and accommodation base, but it is not the same geography as the park zones.
  • One day should have one primary park zone unless you are deliberately driving a longer circuit.
  • Rafting, kayaking and other river activities require current operator, safety and park-rule verification.
  • Road surfaces and access conditions can change; check current local information before setting exact travel times.
Put the plan into practice

Choose the visitor zone before the accommodation

The town base and park-day transfer are separate decisions. Compare the detailed access advice and official visitor information below before selecting a stay.

BihaćTown services and an evening in the river cityTransport to the specific park visitor zone

If the plan changes: If park access or the return cannot be confirmed, use a town day or an arranged outing with clear pickup and return. A property assigned to the Una travel area may be in a different village.

At a glance

Plan the park by zones, not by one central entrance

The biggest itinerary mistake is assuming Una National Park behaves like a compact attraction. Its waterfalls, settlements and river activities are distributed across a much larger landscape.

Stay context

Use the sightseeing plan to choose the right base.

Choose the base and the park-day transport together. Bihać gives you a city stay; Kulen Vakuf is a separate settlement for a park-focused itinerary. Neither accommodation search guarantees access to a waterfall entrance.

Keep Bihać as your base

Choose a city evening and arrange a separate park outing. Compare each address with your arrival point and agreed pickup; the destination filter is not a central-city boundary.

Use these sections for the route, timing and on-the-ground choices that shape the day.

Section 01

Bihać or Kulen Vakuf: choose the overnight around your park day

Keep Bihać as your base when you want the city to be part of the trip and can arrange a separate drive or pickup for the park. Consider Kulen Vakuf when time in the settlement and a Martin Brod visit are your priorities. This is a planning choice: neither base guarantees a walkable waterfall entrance, an available transfer or facilities at a particular accommodation.

For a short visit, one base can keep arrival and departure simpler. Move accommodation only when a second night removes a transfer you have actually checked. Compare the overnight address with your pickup point and next onward journey before deciding to split the stay.

These are itinerary choices, not claims about every stay in either destination.

Section 02

Visit Una without a car: confirm the whole return journey

Before choosing a room, ask a transfer or excursion provider to confirm your dates, the exact visitor zone, pickup point and return destination. Do not assume a service to Bihać or Kulen Vakuf continues to the waterfall entrance. A route shown on a map does not establish a passenger service or timetable. The city’s road-work report describes road approaches, not passenger timetables.

An organized outing and a private transfer can cover different things. Check whether the vehicle waits, whether a guide or entrance ticket is included, where any walking starts and how the return is arranged. If the pickup is in another settlement, include getting there in the plan.

No current through-bus timetable to the waterfall visitor zones is established in this guide. If outward and return transport cannot be confirmed, keep a Bihać town day in the itinerary or choose an outing with explicit pickup and return rather than relying on a last-minute connection.

  • Write down the pickup address and meeting time.
  • Name the visitor zone, not just “Una National Park”.
  • Confirm return pickup, waiting time and any extra charge.
  • Ask about the final walking approach and your group’s access needs.
  • Keep the provider’s contact and booking confirmation available.
Section 03

Make Štrbački buk the main event of its day

Štrbački buk is the strongest first choice when your mental image of Una National Park is powerful cascades and a dramatic river landscape. The park's own excursion material treats the zone as a principal visitor stop, and the scale of the water is enough reason not to schedule it as a hurried detour between unrelated activities. Arrive with time for viewpoints, walking and a pause rather than measuring success by how quickly you can return to Bihać.

The City of Bihać’s update of 21 July 2025 reported asphalt work on the Ćelije approach toward Štrbački buk and work still in progress on the Kulen Vakuf–Martin Brod road. That is historical context, not a live road-status report. Before driving, ask the park or your transport provider which entrance and approach suit your vehicle and date; do not choose a road solely because a navigation app suggests it.

Section 04

Choose Martin Brod for a slower southern-park day

Martin Brod has a different rhythm. The park's visitor material combines waterfalls with the settlement, Rmanj Monastery, watermill traditions and the wider southern Una landscape. That makes it a strong alternative when you prefer a day that mixes nature with a lived-in place rather than focusing primarily on one monumental cascade.

It also works naturally with Kulen Vakuf because both sit in the southern park geography. Instead of asking whether Martin Brod is 'better' than Štrbački buk, ask which day you want: concentrated waterfall drama or a slower zone with settlement and heritage context. With two full days, you no longer need to choose and can give each area its own pace.

Section 05

Plan rafting or kayaking around its meeting point

The Una is famous for river activities, but a sightseeing guide should not casually turn that reputation into an instruction to get on the water. The park regulates navigation and publishes fees/rules for river use, while the actual equipment, guiding and operational safety belong to current activity providers. Water level, weather, participant ability and operator procedures all matter.

If rafting or kayaking is important, choose the activity first, verify the current provider and park requirements, and then build the rest of the day around it. Do not schedule a long waterfall-driving circuit before an activity with a fixed meeting time. Likewise, do not infer that a park navigation fee includes guiding or equipment; the park's published material explicitly distinguishes the park fee from provider services.

Section 06

One day, two days or a longer northwest chapter?

One full day is enough for a meaningful first park experience when you choose one primary zone. Two days remove the false choice between Štrbački buk and Martin Brod and give weather or road delays somewhere to go. A longer stay becomes worthwhile when rafting, cycling, hiking or slower time in Bihać and Kulen Vakuf are genuine priorities rather than extra names on a list.

This is also where route design matters. Una sits far enough northwest that it should usually be a chapter of a Bosnia trip, not a casual out-and-back from Sarajevo or Mostar. The best itinerary gives the region at least one arrival evening, one or two full activity days and a sensible onward direction. That makes the road time serve the trip instead of dominating it.

TimeStrong planWhat to avoid
1 dayOne main zone: Štrbački buk OR Martin BrodTrying to see every waterfall
2 daysOne zone per day or waterfall day + river activityBack-to-back fixed activities with no weather margin
3+ daysAdd Bihać, Kulen Vakuf and a slower activityUsing the region only as a photo detour
Transit day onlyConsider skipping the parkLong approach for a rushed stop
Section 07

Keep the park day distinct from the moving day

Choose the park zone and its return logistics before adding it to a national itinerary. An arrival in Bihać does not settle the journey to the waterfall or an activity meeting point. If the park is a main reason for the trip, protect its own day rather than make it the last stop of a long transfer.

Seasonal planning and packing should support the actual park visit you choose. Check the current conditions with the park and any operator; historical visitor information does not establish today’s access. Retain an alternative if a weather-dependent activity cannot run, and avoid promising yourself two distant zones simply to make a one-day itinerary look complete.

Before you go

Before entering Una National Park

  1. Choose Bihać or Kulen Vakuf only after checking arrival, the park-day transfer and onward travel.
  2. Choose Štrbački buk or Martin Brod as the primary zone for a one-day visit.
  3. Check current road/access information instead of relying on an old drive-time estimate.
  4. If doing a river activity, verify the current provider, park rules and meeting logistics before building the sightseeing day.
  5. Carry enough time margin that weather or road delays do not force a late rushed return.
  6. Book the accommodation around the next morning's park objective: Bihać for city services, park-side locations for southern-zone access.
  7. Without a car, confirm the outward and return journey, exact pickup point and what the transport booking includes.

Questions people ask

Short answers before you set the day.

How many days do you need for Una National Park?

One full day works if you choose one main visitor zone. Two days are much better if you want both Štrbački buk and Martin Brod or want to add a properly organized river activity.

Should I visit Štrbački buk or Martin Brod?

Choose Štrbački buk for the signature large-cascade experience and Martin Brod for a slower southern-park day combining waterfalls, settlement and heritage. With two days, visit both.

Can I visit Una National Park from Bihać?

Yes, and Bihać is a practical service and accommodation base. Just remember that the park zones require road travel; central Bihać is not the park entrance.

Can I raft in Una National Park?

River activities are available in the region, but use current park rules and a verified operator for your date. Conditions, provider operations and safety requirements are time-sensitive.

Is Bihać or Kulen Vakuf a better base for Una National Park?

Compare Bihać for a city stay with a separate park outing, and Kulen Vakuf for a settlement stay built around Martin Brod. Choose using confirmed transport to the visitor zone and your onward journey; neither base guarantees walking access to the waterfalls.

Can I visit Una National Park without a car?

Plan around a confirmed excursion or transfer with an exact pickup and return. This guide does not establish a current through-bus timetable to the waterfall zones. Check whether tickets, guiding, waiting time and the final approach are included before booking.
